Effects of Weaning Age and Creep Feed Type on Growth Performance and Gut Maturation in Weaned Piglets

The objective was to study the effects of weaning in week 5 (W5) vs. 4 (W4), as well liquid (LF) dry feed (DF), on growth performance, disaccharidase activity and nutrient transporter expression after weaning. experiment included 12,923 pigs fed LF or DF pre-weaning period a subpopulation 15 from each group, W4DF, W4LF, W5DF W5LF, which were weighed euthanized five days proximal part small intestine analyzed for maltase, lactase sucrase SGLT-1, GLUT-2 PepT-1. Pigs displayed less maltase (2100 2729 U/mg protein, p < 0.05) but an increased SGLT-1 (∆Ct: 5.22 6.21, = 0.01). weaned W5 heavier than those W4 (9.35 7.11 kg BW, ≤ 0.05), (8.55 7.91 subpopulation. (21.8 kg) (20.6 (SE 0.108, 0.0001), (21.0 lighter (21.5 0.01) at nine weeks. weight gain early post-weaning weeks, although this apparently not explained by accelerated gut maturation.
